Greg Dunlap (aka gdd or heyrocker), former Drupal Initiative lead and pinball enthusiast and current Director of Strategy at Lullabot, joins Tag1 Consulting’s Managing Director Michael Meyers in this Tag1 Team Talk in our 20 years of Drupal series. Greg is another individual who took an unusual route into programming and open source work with projects like Drupal. Over 15 years, Greg’s experience in Drupal has led him from one US coast to the other, and across the world to Sweden. While Greg started programming in high school, his experiences have taken him through photography and photojournalism, building slot and pinball machines, and then into Open Source software. In this interview, Michael and Greg talk about the differences between Greg’s early experiences and the Drupal project, how things have changed, and the future of Drupal. D6LTS wind down and D7 extension with Tim Lehnen

The last two years have been eventful for most of us, and the Drupal community is no exception to that. From the shift to online DrupalCons and their return to in person this year, to new releases of Drupal and the revisiting of old ones, it’s been a momentous time. Drupal 7 was originally scheduled to reach end of life (community support) in November of 2021.

Tag1 Quo D6 End of Support

Drupal 6 reached its end of life Feb 24, 2016. With that end of support, a number of vendors stepped up to take part in the Long Term Support program (LTS). Tag1 Consulting was one of the vendors that have continued to provide support for D6 websites since that time.

Everyone’s new once, no matter what it is you’re doing - the first steps you take, the first time you cook your own breakfast, the first time you head off to school on your own, the first time you make a contribution to a project. There’s a first contribution for everyone, and hopefully it’s a good enough experience that you continue contributing, or you take that experience to contribute to multiple projects.

Drupal 7 End of Life (D7 EOL) postponed until at least November 2023

Drupal 7 End of Life (EOL) was originally planned for Nov. 2020, about ten years after the initial release of the platform. Given the large user base, this was subsequently extended to Nov. 2021. Then, to provide relief and support for everyone impacted by the pandemic Drupal 7 End of Life was extended another year, to Nov. 2022. The pandemic continues to have a major impact on our lives and our businesses and there continues to be a very large user base with over 550,000 websites running the framework - an awesome testament to how great of a platform it is. As such, the security team, and the founder of Drupal, as well as Tag1 and the other Drupal 7 Extended Support (D7ES) providers, felt extending the date another year was the best thing for Drupal and the Drupal community. To support the community, leadership has decided that D7 EOL will be postponed again, until Nov. 2023, and then re-assessed annually thereafter. The official PSA 2022-02-23 announcing this new change has just been posted.
